Food Services

Student with Cafeteria FoodUnion School District's Food Services Program ensures that every student receives a well-balanced meal for breakfast and lunch. Our primary job is to provide meals that are kid friendly and healthy for our students and staff. We offer all meals at no cost to the family. Breakfast and lunch are free. If your child attends after school programs, we also provide a free snack.

We also offer breakfast in the classroom to every student on a daily basis. We use low-sugar, whole-grain, and reduced-fat items. We even naturally sweeten our donuts with apple juice. Our muffins are low fat and use whole-wheat flour. We offer 1% white milk and non-fat chocolate milk.  We try to use fresh fruit when possible in our breakfast bags.

Our schools have a fruit and vegetable bar every day for our Kindergarten to eighth graders. There are four to six kinds of fresh vegetables and two fruits for students to select from. We put veggies that will compliment that day’s menu. These options include salsa and jicama with Mexican food, bean sprouts and mandarin oranges with Asian food, and cucumbers and tomatoes with a Greek menu.

We purchased a nutrition analysis program and created menus and input them into HealthEMeals. Our menus follow all the USDA requirements for menus. We have controlled the sodium to fewer than 1230 mg and saturated fat to under 10%. The total calories, fat, sodium are located at the bottom of the daily menus.

We have three food service managers; Leslie Matta at Union Elementary, Julie Luna at Dos Rios, and Marlenne Pineda at Hurley Ranch. We are mixing a few things up and increasing our recipes from scratch cooked items. We are adding in some of the students' favorites with our new recipes. I hope that all our students like our menu options.

Special Assistance

Union School District Food Service Department qualified for a program through USDA called Special Assistance. It’s for districts with high free/reduced numbers. All of our students can eat breakfast and lunch at no cost to the parents.  So no money is needed for meals at Union District.

At most school districts every year parents fill out an application for Free/Reduced priced meals.  For three school years 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 we will not be requiring any Free/Reduced applications.  No money is needed or paperwork required from families.  One less thing for you to have to worry about.
